Hi Brian,

I consider the Refactoring book by Martin Fowler to be a classic on the subject of refactoring. You can also check out my other articles under the refactoring tag: http://www.basilv.com/psd/blog/tag/refactoring

I absolutely agree with your first point on automated testing. The best bit of software I put together was as good as it was because of extensive automated testing. By the time I was done, it was bulletproof.

Version control, can you believe there are still places that don't use it? And I've worked at all those places! *Sigh*

Good, solid post, and thanks for your kind comments on <a href="http://brianhewitt.wordpress.com/2007/05/09/5-tips-for-success-in-it-consulting/" rel="nofollow">mine</a>! :)

Thanks Jonathan, Daniel for the kind comments. And yes, Daniel, many projects I have seen do have a long, long way to go. I don't know how to explain it either :(
